mixed media paintings rich in texture... inspired by nature and people

Looking, learning to see, spontaneous image development and experimentation continue to be central themes in my work. Recent pieces are primarily nature inspired organic forms or faces rich in texture. Skies, trees, wildflowers, people, and the local landscape continue to be the vehicle for my visual language. Mixed media is used including powder graphite, powder charcoal and found objects, along with layering through the addition and subtraction of layers of paint, collage, acrylic medium, glue and recycled paint.
The emphasis in the work is on process. Every mark, wash, stroke, scrape or line determines the direction of the next. My goal is to respond to color, form, texture and line observing and discovering the theme or impact of each piece. Whether the lines, forms, composition and colour are symbolic in nature, steeped in heartfelt meaning or a celebration of open-ended abstract expression; I am often moved in unexpected directions by the demands of each piece. As I work, each piece seems to be a collaboration between those skills honed and developed over time and those glorious “accidents” that demand a response. I seek to respond to God, the ultimate creator. My goal is to be alert, observant, responsive and courageous enough to go with the flow and not work from my head too much!
